Not always. RainSpike helps reduce watering frequency and make rainfall more useful, but plants may still need manual watering during dry or hot periods.

Can I fill RainSpike by hand?

Yes. RainSpike can catch rain or be filled manually through the dish / center opening.

Can I use it with a pot?

Yes. We encourage covering the RainSpike with a pot, rocks, mulch, or a small planter. Keep the setup stable and make sure water can still reach the opening.

How often do I refill it?

That depends on plant size, soil type, sun exposure, temperature, rainfall, and how dry the area gets.

What is it made from?

RainSpike is made from porous terracotta clay that allows water to slowly move into nearby soil.

Where should I put it?

Place it near plant roots, with the spike buried and the dish close to soil level.

Install RainSpike in Minutes

1. Choose a thirsty plant or planting area.

Pick a spot where passive watering would help most.

Good places to start:

• A plant that dries out quickly
• A raised bed
• A large outdoor planter
• A container garden
• A sunny garden edge
• A plant you constantly forget to water

2. Place or bury the tapered spike underground.

Dig a hole deep enough for the tapered spike.

• Place the spike below the soil surface
• Keep the dish at soil level
• Avoid forcing the clay into compacted soil
• Backfill around the spike to hold it steady

3. Keep the 10-inch dish level with the soil.

The dish should sit flat so rainwater can run toward the center opening.

• Level the dish
• Keep the center opening accessible
• Make sure rainwater can enter
• Position it near the plants you want to support

4. Cover the center opening.

Cover the center hole in a way that allows rainwater to enter while reducing evaporation.

Recommended covering options:

• A clay pot
• A potted plant
• Rocks
• Mulch
• Decorative garden objects
• A small planter that acts as a funnel

5. Use a terracotta pot for the cleanest look.

Our favorite method is to place a terracotta clay pot over the RainSpike opening.

Why it works:

• Most terracotta pots visually match RainSpike
• The setup looks cohesive
• The pot covers the opening
• Rainwater can still flow down
• The garden looks intentional instead of technical

Fill the pot with:

• Rocks
• Decorative material
• Soil
• A shallow-rooted plant

6. Choose the right cover plant.

Some plants work especially well when placed in a pot above the RainSpike opening.

Best cover plant traits:

• Long, thin stems
• Stems that reach beyond the diameter of the RainSpike
• Shallow roots
• Low to moderate water needs
• Good drainage
• A growth habit that helps direct rainwater toward the center of the pot

The plant above RainSpike can act as both:

• A decorative cover
• A natural rain funnel

Ideally, the cover plant should not absorb all the water itself. Extra water should pass through the pot’s drainage hole and drip into the RainSpike reservoir below.

7. Let rainwater flow in.

Once installed:

• Rain lands on the dish
• Water runs toward the center opening
• The cover helps guide water downward
• RainSpike collects water
• Nearby plants gradually access the water through the porous clay

8. Check and adjust.

During the first few weeks:

• Watch nearby plants
• Check soil moisture
• Notice how fast water disappears
• Refill manually during dry weather
• Move or add RainSpikes as needed
