How to install

1. Place or bury the tapered spike underground.

2. Keep the 10-inch dish level with the soil surface.

3. Cover the center hole with a pot, rocks, mulch, or another garden element.

The center hole should be covered in a way that allows rainwater to enter while reducing evaporation.

Preferred method

Our favorite method is to place a terracotta clay pot over the RainSpike opening.

Most terracotta pots from retailers like Home Depot or Lowe’s are visually similar in color to RainSpike, which helps the setup look natural and cohesive.

The pot can then be filled with:

  • Rocks
  • Decorative material
  • Soil and a shallow-rooted plant

    Recommended Cover Plants

    Some plants work especially well when placed in a pot above the RainSpike opening.

    Ideal plant traits

    • Long, thin stems
    • Stems that reach beyond the diameter of the RainSpike
    • Shallow roots
    • Low to moderate water needs
    • Good drainage
    • The ability to direct rainwater toward the center of the pot

    Why this matters

    The plant above the RainSpike can serve as both a decorative cover and a natural funnel. Ideally it shouldn’t absorb all of the rainwater itself. Excess water should pass through the drainage hole and drip into the RainSpike

4. Allow rainwater to flow into the underground reservoir.

5. Nearby plants gradually draw water from the porous clay reservoir.
